BBC Sounds – Later with Jools Holland | Social Interviews Series

Commissioned by BBC Music and produced by Loftus Media, this Later with Jools Holland social-interview series invited some of the UK’s most acclaimed contemporary artists; FKA Twigs, Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya, Sampa the Great, and Serge Pizzorno (Kasabian) to reflect on their creative journeys in intimate, unhurried conversations.

Yohan Forbes of Kumo London was brought in under Loftus Media’s direction to deliver cinematography and post-production across the series, crafting a unified visual grammar that translated Later’s broadcast legacy into the digital language of BBC Sounds and BBC Music’s social platforms.

Later with Jools Holland has long been a showcase for world-class performance and artistry.

For BBC Sounds, the series expanded into a new digital chapter, a social-first suite of short interviews and performances designed to bring fans closer to the artists behind the music.

Kumo London was commissioned by Loftus Media to provide cinematography and post-production across the full run of interview features, filmed at BBC Studios London.

The project spotlighted five leading voices shaping contemporary sound: Joy Crookes, FKA Twigs, Nilüfer Yanya, Sampa the Great, and Serge Pizzorno (Kasabian).

Each film captured the artist’s creative world in a minimal, atmospheric setting, balancing BBC Music’s legacy tone with the intimacy and authorship of modern social storytelling. Deliverables included 16:9 and 9:16  cutdowns for multi-platform broadcast distribution, optimised for BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds’ digital channels.

STRATEGIC INSIGHT

BBC Sounds sought to evolve Later with Jools Holland into a format that resonated beyond traditional broadcast audiences, a storytelling framework that could live across social ecosystems while maintaining editorial integrity.

Kumo London’s approach was to shoot cinematically but edit intuitively, focusing on honest, emotionally resonant interviews that would play seamlessly across both broadcast and mobile contexts.

Working closely with BBC editorial teams, we ensured every visual carried cultural depth, editorial precision, and a visual identity that could scale globally across BBC Sounds’ social output.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Working closely with BBC editorial teams, we ensured every visual carried cultural depth, editorial precision, and a visual identity that could scale globally across BBC Sounds’ social output.

In an era of short-form overload, these films cut through with emotional tone and aesthetic clarity, placing the audience face-to-face with the artist, stripped of spectacle.

They stand as proof that broadcast storytelling can thrive within digital spaces when built on emotional intelligence, cinematographic discipline, and platform fluency.

Kumo London’s delivery proved that a filmmaker-led production model can operate seamlessly within broadcast systems, producing content that is technically robust, human-centred and timeless in feel.
