Kumo London partnered with BBC Sounds to film an exclusive run of Later with Jools Holland artist interviews, featuring some of the most acclaimed names in music (Sampa The Great, FKA Twigs, Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya and Serge Pizzorno (The S.L.P & Kasabian). Filmed at BBC Studios, this series combined broadcast-quality multi-camera filming with intimate conversation, creating engaging, shareable content for BBC Sounds’ social channels and digital platforms.

STRATEGIC INSIGHT

The challenge was twofold:

1. Maintain the visual prestige of Later with Jools Holland, one of the UK’s most respected music programmes.

2. Adapt the footage for digital-first audiences with rapid delivery for BBC Sounds’ high-traffic social platforms.

Our solution combined multi-camera cinematography for dynamic coverage with on-the-spot editing workflows, ensuring content was ready for release within weekly schedule. This not only reinforced BBC Sounds’ heritage in music journalism but also extended its reach to younger, highly engaged online viewers.

BBC Sounds needed short-form, high-impact content that balanced the intimacy of artist interviews with the high production values audiences expect from the Later with Jools Holland brand. Working on-site at BBC Studios London allowed us to integrate with the existing production workflow, creating a seamless link between the studio’s live-performance heritage and the evolving demands of social-first storytelling.

This series wasn’t just promo content, it was artist-first storytelling for digital culture. Our job was to be technically invisible but emotionally resonant: to capture artists in a moment of pause, reflection or vulnerability before their live performance. That meant working quickly inside BBC Studios, often with limited setup windows, and building trust with talent within seconds. Interview planning, lighting, lensing, sound, every part of this setup had to feel natural and ready for real human moments.

Under the direction of Richard Berry and BBC producer Fiona Halon, Kumo London led on interview planning, cinematography and post-production for a series of short edits tailored for BBC Music and BBC Sounds’ digital distribution channels. The content was optimised for social (TikTok, Instagram and Twitter/X), combining striking visuals with authentic voice and tone.
